What Is Diabetes Mellitus and What Its Symptoms Are

It results from both, defect in insulin secretion and action. ‘Sweet Urine’ was actually the term used in olden times for diabetes mellitus and the reason for using this term was that when the level of glucose increases in the blood, the glucose enters into the urine.

The level of glucose is controlled in the blood by insulin . It is a hormone that is produced by a gland named pancreas . Diabetes mostly leads to a problem that is called hyperglycemia as diabetic patients either have insufficient production of insulin or absence of insulin. Although diabetes mellitus can be controlled but it lasts for life time, that’s why it is called a chronic medical condition.

As the time goes on, diabetes mellitus may lead to blindness, kidney failure and nerve damage. The arteries get hardened and narrowed normally due to diabetes mellitus. This leads to problems such as heart attack, strokes and other diseases that are related with heart and large blood vessel .
There are certain symptoms of diabetes mellitus:

1. Due to high level of sugar, which is in a form of glucose in blood, the amount of urination per day increases due to which dehydration occurs.

2. As insulin is not performing in its normal condition so diabetes mellitus affects the metabolism of protein, fat and carbohydrate.

3. Although the amount of food intake everyday increases but the weight continue to lose.

4. Nausea, vomiting and fatigue are caused to the diabetic patients if they are not treated well.

5. Diabetic patients do develop infections regarding bladder, skin and vaginal areas.

6. Diabetic patient may have blurred vision due to variation in blood glucose level.

7. If blood glucose level is too high then it may lead to coma and lethargy.

Today, diabetes is found in large number of people and if it is not controlled then soon it will become one of the major causes of death. The fact is that all the diseases in the world can be controlled but the only requirement is the will power of the patient.
