About Myelodysplasia and Myelodysplasia Prognosis

Myelodysplasia, which is also known as MDS, is a disease regarding blood cells. It is regarding group of disorders and in it bone marrow’s function is turned abnormal due to which the number of red blood cells produced are not sufficient, it is below the level of normal production of red blood cells. The production of all types of blood cells is affected by MDS including red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. It is present in both, children and adults but it is highly found in adults, mostly in those who are above the age of 50.

There is a bit higher chance of MDS in males rather than in females. MDS is caused by both, genetic and environmental factors. Environmental factors such as getting exposed to some toxic chemicals and some medicines, viral infections and excessive radiation. But people do survive in MDS and what is the percentage of survival can only be known by doing a prognosis. In this article you will learn about Myelodysplasia prognosis.

Now, Prognosis is a prediction regarding the course of a disease . It is like a prospect on what are the chances of survival of the patient. The survival possibilities of those people who are diagnosed with MDS depend upon certain things. Following are those things:

• International Prognostic Scoring System (IPSS) risk category.
• Underlying medical problems which are present.
• Age.

To predict long-term outcome in MDS the tool most commonly used is IPSS which helps in MDS prognosis but the important part which is to be remembered is that these numbers actually tells us the averages and it is not necessary that it may predict what will happen in your situation. The MDS prognosis may include:

• Time duration of MDS .
• Possible outcomes of MDS .
• Chances of recovering and time taken in recovering.
• Survival rates.
• Death rates.

Patients of MDS should rely on MDS prognosis but not much because these chances vary from patient to patient though according to surveys the chances of survival are up to 60 percent. Well, one should try to take precautions for all diseases as each disease may cause death.
